Racontée par un enfant, l'histoire de cette famille bien comme il faut et tentant de survivre malgré
le drame qui la frappe, se révèle être un formidable et grinçant thriller. Tour à tour drôle et
poignante, elle suscite un étrange malaise et happe implacablement le lecteur dans son tourbillon.

Il s'appelle Harry Pickles, il a neuf ans et il est sans doute le garçon le plus rapide du monde. Ses
parents sont probablement les plus beaux. Son petit frère Daniel court comme une fille mais il est,
à sa manière, une star. Tout va donc pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes, jusqu'à ce
fameux voyage scolaire où Daniel est kidnappé.
C’est à travers les yeux du jeune Harry que nous vivons cette tragédie. En proie à la culpabilité,
aux cauchemars, aux fantasmes, rejeté par tous ses copains sauf Terry, le dangereux petit
mythomane, Harry se retrouve livré à lui-même, tenté par le suicide et le meurtre. Pendant ce
temps, ses parents se déchirent, s’épuisent et vieillissent à vue d’oeil. Harry voit ainsi sa mère se
détruire, incapable de faire le deuil de cet enfant volatilisé, et entraîner dans sa chute son couple
et le bonheur familial.
