Paris, 17 octobre 1961. Tout juste débarqué d'Angleterre, Nigel Dalby assiste à une manifestation pacifique de musulmans défilant pour une "Algérie algérienne", réprimée dans le sang par la police de Papon. Avec sa fiancée, Harriet, il fait alors connaissance de deux jeunes Algériens décidés à venger leurs martyrs... Des années plus tard, alors que Nigel est décédé, sa fille reçoit un étrange manuscrit censé être la confession de son père expliquant, entre autres, la mystérieuse disparition de Harriet.
