Le commissaire Dupin a quitté sa base de Concarneau et participe avec ennui à un séminaire des forces de police bretonnes à Saint-Malo quand, à la faveur d'une pause, il est le quasi-témoin du meurtre en plein marché d'une cheffe étoilée de Dinard par sa sœur cadette, elle-même cheffe montante. Dupin et deux commissaires présents au séminaire prennent l'affaire en main. Coup de folie ? Arrêtée, la coupable reste mutique sur son geste et ses motivations. On sait seulement que les sœurs rivales se vouaient une jalousie et une haine féroces : les enquêteurs mettent au jour les coups fourrés qu'elles fomentaient l'une contre l'autre et découvrent la situation financière précaire de la cadette.
